Prompt response: I remember visiting a lakeside cabin where the calm water and towering trees created a perfect escape. I felt so peaceful there, far from all the noise and stress of daily life. I spent hours by the shore, soaking in the beauty and silence. When it was time to go, I felt a strong urge to stay and make that peaceful place my own. Looking back, it’s the most relaxed I’ve ever felt.

Summary: Today we worked on our one pager for the story "Ambush".

Reflection: The one pager helps me understand more about the story we read.

  Near-death experiences (NDEs) are fascinating because they make me wonder if there’s something beyond this life. Some people describe bright lights, feelings of peace, or even seeing loved ones who have passed away, which sounds spiritual. Scientists, though, say these experiences might just be the brain reacting to trauma, like a flood of chemicals creating hallucinations. I think there could be truth in both views—maybe NDEs are our minds trying to make sense of something we don’t fully understand. If they are real, they could mean there’s an afterlife, which is both comforting and a little scary. Either way, NDEs remind me how mysterious life and death really are.

Prompt: What life skills have you learned in high school that will help you live independently after high school? Which skills do you think are essential for your success after high school?

 In high school, I’ve learned a lot of skills that will help me live independently. One of the most important ones is time management; balancing schoolwork, extracurriculars, and a social life has taught me how to prioritize tasks. I’ve also learned basic cooking skills, which will be super useful when I need to make meals for myself. Another essential skill is budgeting money, like how to manage my allowance or part-time job earnings to save for things I want or need. Being able to communicate effectively with teachers, friends, and family has also made me more confident in handling tough situations. Overall, I think learning to manage my responsibilities and taking care of myself are the most important skills for my success after high school. Newsela
